Future Legends
An exhibition hosted in the New York University Clive Davis gallery showcasing Black storytelling through digital and traditional media
As technology increasingly shapes our collective future, the question of who gets to imagine, design, and archive it becomes crucial. Too often, these futures are envisioned for us. Author and cultural critic Michele Wallace writes, "These people—Black visual artists—make things and make visions. Their job, their goal is to re-envision vision." This call to re-envision grounds Future Legends, an exhibition that draws on the legacy of Black art to imagine the worlds still to come and to provide a platform for those who will become our legacy. Without those who expand Black visual culture, Black communities risk being confined to the perspectives of others. This absence is not only about missing stories; it is about missing futures.
In celebration of Black History Month, Future Legends explores how technology shapes storytelling and cultural preservation in the digital age. Drawing inspiration from Black artistic traditions and contemporary innovations, this exhibition showcases how new media tools can expand our understanding of cultural heritage, amplify underrepresented narratives, and expand our collective vision of the future. The selected artists use technology to excavate histories, reimagine archives, and actively develop their own unique visual language, new guides for us to create.
Presented by Black Interactive in partnership with NYU Tisch, ITP, and CMEP.
